Bill Nicholson is comfortably the most famous player to have played for the Fleet.
I am sure his experiences at Stonebridge Road held him in great stead at White Hart Lane.
He played for England also, again I am sure as a direct result of playing for us!

His name used to be on a board over the entrance onto the pitch from the players tunnel. A true legend.
If you go back before 1946, I would suggest that Charlie Buchan's name is also well up there. Famous from 1951 for Charlie Buchan's Football Monthly magazine, a must buy for all football supporters, Charlie played for Northfleet United from 1909-10 season, before signing for Leyton the following season. In 1911 Buchan was transferred from Leyton to Sunderland where he played up until 1925 before re-signing for Arsenal for a £2,000 fee. He had originally been with Arsenal before joining Northfleet United. He played in the losing Arsenal 1927 FA Cup Final side against Cardiff City.

Purely for family reasons Garry Aldous

But as a Northfleet United player, rather than a GNFC one, is Nicholson eligible for a 'club legend' place considering that the club as we know it was formed in 1946?

Really tough to call. At a push Jimmy Jackson just pips Portway for my vote.

If we are talking 'famous' then none more so than Jimmy Bullard and making England squad last year (ish??)
If we are talking legend then surely it is between JJ and Ports.... but i agree its always about opinions in this situ!!!!
good fun though... Jacko gets my vote

Got to be Lee Smelt. I used to work on the turnstile and on one wet Tuesday night game the then Charlton Manager and his sidekick (can't remember their names) came along to watch Lee as did a number of professional clubs at that time. An overzealous steward not recognising the Charlton Manager made him pay to get in...I think that ended Charltons interest.

In an era when shirts were worn outside of the shorts and socks could be rolled down without shin pads the "great" Dave Bostock was a goal machine....or is that a case of rose tinted specs?

I was the west stand steward in Smelt's day.
He had all sorts of scouts came to watch him.
Made 'em all pay their 50p's too!!Posted 7 months ago # -

We were all wondering whether or not somebody at Stonebridge road had broken six mirrors but no, the forty two years of bad luck can all be laid at one mans door.

As one of the oldies I first attended SBR in 1955, Honestly can't remember the opponents, But have vivid memories of the Southern League championship side, So for me it's Jimmy Logie, From the late 60's through to a couple of years ago when I had time I watched football away from the Gravesend area so I cannot in fairness comment on the many others mentioned on here even though the names are familiar from press reports, that is how I kept in touch with what was going on at SBR.

But I was also there when we signed Hughes, Burrett, Woolfe, Woon, Smelt, Bostock, Portway, Cotter, Cowan, Bullard, Macca, Jacko, Blewden etc.
So I must have a bit of luck with me too!Posted 7 months ago #
