Aren't Man U in financial difficulties too?

Perhaps we can organise a whip round for them. That should create a bit of publicity

Then change our name and keep the money...........Shameful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the great scheme of things I dont think a change back to G&NFC will make much difference. I prefered the old name but Ebbsfleet isn't the worst we could have been sadled with.

    Stirling Meerkats anyone?

    Simples!

I believe you are just throwing more fat on the fire, by distracting from the real issue of keeping the club afloat.

So you do not regard such a measure has perhaps good public relations then? That trying to get people talking about the club would not be good marketing possibly? That keeping the club afloat requires engaging with the local population?
I'm quite surprised really to be honest.

The general public couldn't give a shit what we're called
The locals don't like Ebbsfleet, but weren't all that happy with Northfleet.

The fans? They'd rather the ridicule would stop.

Chris you seem determined to open old wounds and I've tried to avoid rising to the bait and am determined not to now. We have more important issues to contend with.

I will say this, though I know anything I say will be of no consequence to you or change your opinion.

First of all I have not slagged anyone off as you put it. that is a gross misrepresentation of what I said about Chris and Jessica and well you know it.

my comments were restricted to one particular issue and that alone. Both of them wanted to put themselves forward for the club board as MYFC representatives and to act in an executive manner at the club. they published this wish on the forum and invited comment. I said that I did not think they would be suitable and said why. i was very measured in what I said and justified it very clearly. I also made it clear that it was my opinion and i am entitled to give it. Whether others agree or not is a matter for them. When discussing whether someone is suitable ofor something it is extremely difficult to give an honest opinion while trying to prevent it getting personal. I think I have acknowledged both of their qualities in many other ways and at many times. I alone defended Chris's right to stand for the board when he did. In fact made it possible for him to log in again so that he could. When Jessica was first elected to the Society board she was subject to ignorant abuse from others from day one and I was prominet in countering that. Indeed this was the issue that divided me from Gordon and Sally and lead to me getting a torrent of abuse from that side too.
Let me also say that I was far from alone in the opinion I had about their suitability for a position on the club board, far from alone. Opposition came from others very closely associated with the club too. the only difference was that I had the guts to say so plainly and say why. I took no pleasure in it. Despite the constant claims from yourself and a few others I had no pretentions or ambitions myself at all. Ridiculous to think I might given the lack of proximity I have to the club.

I regret that it has been the cause of falling out with a small number of people but I do not regret my opinion and i have not changed it either. That said i have a high regard for both of them, enjoy their company and feel perfectly comfortable with both of them when I see them. Whether they feel the same I don't know. That is for them to decide. I do regularly see Chris at matches and unless he is very good at hiding his feelings, he appears to be quite relaxed too.

And there in a nutshell is the problem with MYFC. Start a fairly constructive discussion (where it would appear it contains posters who are both Ebbsfleet locals and MYFC members) and within two pages the slagging starts. The thread now looses its point and most of us can't be bothered to read anymore. If you have a problem - arrange to meet behind the Plough End one Saturday afternoon and sort it out there, not here. Better still meet on the pitch and charge an entry fee - at least the club would raise some important funds.. Name change discussion anyone!!

And ..... in true MYFC style there will be 30 pages of discussion (the point of which is normally lost at about page 5) until such time as a general squabble breaks out and the thread looses its point. No decision will be made, and the post and all the contributions will disappear into the forum vault until somebody else raises the topic ...Name Change Anyone?

Yes I would prefer to keep to the topic myself too.

Points made on MYFC have been that already committed fans prefer the old name but don't want to mess again with the name. I am more interested in people in the Gravesham area that are not so committed.
Agian let me stress, the point of the exercise is NOT to change the name, it is to ask the local population what THEY thought. Is it an issue that would attract their interest in any way. It's been suggested that they would not care either way. It is obvious that results on the pitch are the real key to getting fans back through the gates but is there no other way of creating news about the club that may spark interest? I think that people like being asked their views on issues but you need to spark the issue in the first place. We don't need huge numbers to be engaged by it, relatively small numbers taking note could have a proportionately large effect on our attendance.

Paul - have your discussion - chuck in the stuff that only Duncan - Roly and perhaps some MYFC Board members would be aware of (re sponsors etc) - Put a time limit on it - go to a vote - implement it and move on. Somehow I think we will still be discussing this in 6 months, 12 months 18 months zzzzzzzzz or until such time as the club hits the skids.

Yes, the issue about sponsors is an important one of course. I know Duncan will be discussing this with Eurostar soon, and I will ask his and Roly's views and try and gauge Eurostars likely reaction. It may be the case that Eurostar would not be against polling the people of gravesham area as it would be a story that highlights their company anyway and also get people talking about them.

I think you may be flogging a dead horse with the fair people of Gravesham Paul .... Generally the local population couldn't give a toss about what goes on at the bottom of Stonebridge Hill, and even less what its called.

The only thing, historically, that has motivated the locals is a winning team (irrespective if its 'on the road to Wembley' or because it has a goal scoring legend in Mr Portway banging in goals for fun, albeit in a lower division than we are now)

The ultimate aim should be to sort the finances out (no mean feat I grant you, and maybe an impossible ask of MYFC) - get a competitive team on the pitch - playing attacking football (and winning more games than it loses) and you could call them what you like.

On another post, perhaps on the MYFC site, there was talk about a big screen going up at the ground for the Olympics.

I know are club officials will have this on board, but I would think there really could be a good tie up with Eurostar, EUFC and the Council benefitting everyone, particularly us.

If I was involved with Eurostar, I would be very keen to keep the link with the club going. I think we should be also.

I also think Ebbsfleet United describes perfectly the situation of the ground, or at least as well as Gravesend and Northfleet did.

Yes, Location wise it is spot on, The Ebbsfleet was a tributary waterway of the River Thames and ran behind the Plough end stand under Stonebridge Road and out into the then fields towards springhead, Many years ago not far from where the ground stands was a neolithic settlement known as Ebbsfleet, So although we now have an international station and a modern day 'settlement' in the making the site of the ground historically is Ebbsfleet, Maybe a name change to Ebbsfleet should have taken place when the ground was first occupied by Northfleet United, or when they joined up with Gravesend, Either way the club have always been and probably always will be known as the 'Fleet' whether it be Ebbs or North or South the latter two lying each side of the then Ebbsfleet waterway.

You see, that is an interesting story that could be included in any blurb that was sent to people when we asked what they thought.

Who knows, the "i don't give a sh*t" folk might instead go, "oh really, i didn't know that"

Now come on Gaz as an old'n you must know a little bit about the local history, They don't all support Dartford they are lying asleep waiting to be woken and told there is another Ebbsfleet settlement at the bottom of Stonebridge hill that needs their presence.

From personal experience, the only "neolithic supporters" that went to Dartford, were only Fleet supporters when Dartford were in their darkest hours!

Was!! It's still there, albeit mainly in a culvert. Flows into the Thames at Northfleet creek. Stroll along and take a peek.

I was not sure if it was still there Bill, Don't live in the area any more and only go there on match days, I know back in the fifties and sixties it was very prominent behind the Plough end and where it ran out across the fields where the Road to Ebbsfleet Station now stands.

I understand that the tidal creek, or fleet, went all the way to Southfleet from Northfleet via Ebbsfleet.
Apparently you used to be able to get by boat to Southfleet when the tide was in.

May be even as far as The Ship in Southfleet which is one of our BOSS supporters!

Yes, Many, Many years ago it was a tidal navigable waterway from the River Thames.

So, With the clubs ground lying right adjacent to the site of this once important waterway Maybe Ebbsfleet is the 'Correct' name for the club, Even though it came into being for far more modern reasons.
