Contacting those sleeping thousands

First of all, apologies if anyone else has already mentioned this; I am getting really bad lately at not spotting threads that already exist.

I'm sure many other Fleet fans were staggered by the people that came out the woodwork & travelled to Villa Park, not to mention those that crammed in to watch us play Canvey in our promotion season. Most of all, whoever would have predicted that so many people would have travelled to watch us at Wembley where we dwarfed the contingent provided by a club that had spent most of its time in the Football League?

The majority of those thousands at Wembley bought their tickets at the ground - they were local people. We keep asking where do they come from & more to the point, where do they disappear off to afterwards. There is a database with the names & addresses of a lot of these people & an attempt is being made to raise the money to do a couple of mail outs to them & try & re-kindle the interest that is obviously there but which lies dormant most of the time.

If you are interested, this is the address: http://www.pledgebank.com/FleetMail

Surprised Arithon didn't come post this on here himself, it's his pledge isn't it?

Perhaps he's still hiding from the times he slagged of Jessica, Chris and the EUFC fans...

Good one. There are up to 2000 local households in the "postal address only wembley" database plus. Note this is households - so number of people wives/children etc. will be significantly more.

This is in addition to the 500 local email database that is already being used for "Fleet News" etc.

Results like today at Luton will awaken many of them, A few successful results combined with entertaining football may not bring back the thousands that attended the 'Big' games but will certainly get the gates up to around 1500 which is certainly better than the current 800 or so.

People will look at that result read the report and think hey hang on a minute! it certainly wont damage the crowd!, i mentioned something about this before, about the database, send a begging letter to everyone on it, ok it will go to fans that attend every game but it will reach the ones who don't ask them for a pound to help keep the club they were willing to come and cheer at wembley even if a quarter of them give a pound we havent lost nothing!!!!

If MyFC implodes & takes the Fleet with it, it will be a sad testament to the self destructiveness of human nature.

The future of the club is more important than any individual's pride or ego, but maybe it's easier for me to say this because I've never had the time available to do more than watch the football & hide from the wife how much disappears from our account each month to the FT, FotF & MyFC.

Chris, can we please just drop this bitterness and bile please? It is not helping anyone at all.
Thanks for putting this up on this forum Graham.
We are a small club with a relatively small potential fan base and we really should be able to contact most of them on a regular basis for little or no cost. The amount of information the general fans receive about the club is woeful IMO and we really should address this. The excellent work of BOSS will be more effective if they have some finance to be able to get the tools for the job.

    Please support this.

And on a chirpier note - please lend this a few of your hard-earned pounds! We're working on a few more things to broaden the appeal of SR, including a vote to reduce admissions for the last three home games of the season But we need to get the message out and get those casual fans back in.

I think this targeted mail-out is the best way to go, and it sure beats hope alone. I'm across the North Sea and I won't be receiving a visit from this particular postman, but I'm in for £20. We need another 28 to join the 72 who are already in and complete the pledge.

Very mature Chris, I notice one of my posts was deleted as well - you wouldn't know anything about that would you? You've made your point, and it's obvious you don't like Paul. Personally I couldn't give a toss.

This thread is about trying to get people to step up to donate to put more bums on seats. Do you think you are helping or hindering that effort?

You were the one repeating your posts for no reason. Duplicate posts tend to be deleted, when I figured you'd continue ad nauseum I thought I'd reciprocate.

I made one post, there have now been what, 5 more about it? Who's hindering what here?

What does it mean where there is a green tick against a few names. The legend says "they've done it". Done what (that the others haven't done)?

The idea with pledgebank is that you pledge for something, and when you've paid/done whatever the pledge says then you go back and click a button that says "I've done it!" It's not all that intuitive and many click the button at the time of pledging

Whilst I appreciate the enthusiasm of contacting the "missing thousands" such as the Wembley attendees, I think it's a bit naive to assume those extra locals who turned up at Wembley are just sitting on their hands doing nothing every Saturday afternoon. Fact is, a large portion of them are probably at the Valley, the New Den, the Emirates, Stamford Bridge, Priestfield or wherever. People turn up for the day out when their local non-league team has a high-profile game like a Wembley final, but it's presumptuous to imagine they don't already have a long-term/regular support for another team. OK, there's maybe a few "floating supporters" in that Wembley throng, but I rather suspect it's much fewer (in percentage terms) than people on here are assuming. I'm afraid to say.

Even if just 1% of the wembley 25,000 where to become fleet fans that would mean 250 extra!!?? i dont think we are overdoing it at 1% are we??!!

Kinda have to agree with Floyd - but understand also that doing something is better than nothing...

However, I dont so much think that those who went to Wembley go elsewhere for their football, I think they dont go ANYWHERE.

How many of those who went to Wemebly did it to support Fleet? How many more did it cos it was a "day out", a beano on the coach with all the lads from the pub etc?

Yes, I know that over 3,000 turned up for the free game. But how many more games did they come to?

Its a basic fact that while Fleet are playing at the bottom end of the laegue, or not involved in a cup that the majority or the local population couldnt give a toss about what happens at Stonebridge Road. The easy alternative of watching Jeff Stelling wins out everytime.

Is there an answer? In the long term, only success on the pitch. Short term - better marketing, a greater "match-day experience" have all been suggested - with only discounts really being tried - and not huge amounts of success shown...

You summed it up Patman, Success on the pitch is what will bring back the fans....No not the thousands that went to wembley, But certainly anything up to an additional 1500 over those 800 of so who have been attending recently, If we string together another couple of wins against Chester and Histon it will be very interesting to see how many turn up against high flyers York City and the return of Michael Gash, providing of course the game is promoted well.

I certainly don't disagree that winning games is the most effective way of bringing fans through the gate. I'm confused about the message here with respect to this funding drive though. Are you saying that clubbing together for a decent printer and canvassing the public is a waste of time and money and I should put my £20 back in my pocket?

It won't happen simple as, the local community just don't give 2 hoots about the club and certainly won't pay that price to watch non league football when they can pay a fiver more to watch Championship/League 1 football.

Read what i put about doing something is better than nothing, V...

But, in all honesty, if the locals wanted to watch Fleet play - they would already be turning up.

Just sending them out a mailer (its not known as Junk Mail by accident) is hardly likely to convince them to turn up if they havent been since Wembley...

Apart from the BOSS scheme which is doing a good job for the club, the club severely lacks marketing and PR skills.

As all too often on here, Someone (V) Is attempting to promote and do something positive (we dont all have to agree whether it will be effective) and the same old negative comments come up!

I believe that the downfall of MYFC is not far away and that some of the decisions have been a bit wayward but the negativity I read on here day after day from so called 'supporters' (fans maybe, supporters - no) is also detrimental to our Football Club.

Whats the chances of having a Positive/Supportive thread on here?? I dont mean 'heads in the sand' stuff, I mean stop bickering and slaughtering every suggestion that is made!!!

    I live in hope!!!

Match Day Experience packages tailored to suit Families, businesses, Birthday celebrations etc etc, Can work well providing the local public know they exist, ie advertised on the club website, in the programme, local press, Local businesses alongside the BOSS scheme, flyers, Posters wherever they can be placed, The idea is to make it a day/afternoon out not just the football, I don't know what facilities are available at SBR for entertaining but the last 'Match day experience' package I went on a few years ago albeit a Div 1 side the package included....Welcome Drink, a basic 2 course pre match meal (Chilli), Seat in Main Stand, Match day programme for each person, Photo shoot after the game with 3 of the players (included 3 photos to keep), Autographs of players, Availability of pay bar after the game, The cost £500.00 for 5 people.
I'm not saying that sort of price would attract many to SBR but the concept could well work. But it would need to be publicised well.

    Like that idea 190GKN...

£100/head is a lot of cash... But most people have a birthday once a year so could be done for that kinda thing...

This way we are not reliant on new fans, just giving the ones who already turn up the option to spend more money!

This kinda thing should be easy to promote in the programme / website as it will appeal to fans only.

Maybe offer "cut-price" versions of this for mid-week games as well

The pricing could also be tailored depending on the type of package, For example a childs birthday package could be a burger and chips plus autographs and photographs with their favorite players, whereas a group of say 6 adults would go for maybe the welcome drink, Meal and maybe a couple of after match drinks, Price would be according to what was offered in the package, The figure I quoted was the amount we paid for a Div 1 package, the price we could charge would depend on what facilities we can offer,
The main aspect of this kind of thing at our level is to give the paying customer what he/she wants within an affordable budget and the clubs facilities and tailor the charge accordingly. on the advertising front I ommitted flyers/posters to local schools in the previous post.

Thats a good idea 190GKN, these things need to be highlighted maybe to get bums on seats why don't the council let us advertise in some of the EMPTY units dotted around the town centre by letting the public know about up and coming events for example the decrease in matchday tickets etc...
Also i wouldn't mind betting that the local community doesn't even read about how the team is getting on in the local press and this is one of the reasons why advertising in the local press has kind of failed in the past?
