By all accounts Amy did a good job for the 20 minutes or so that she refereed the Championship game between Coventry and Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. It takes a lot of hard work to get to refereeing at that level and you have to have achieved good marks from both clubs and assessors.
It makes me wonder what is happening at Stonebridge Road when she referees because the forum usually has several people claiming she was rubbish (mind you for some reason every week the referee is rubbish!).
    Is it that:
She always has a bad game every time she is there?
    or
Do the fans (or even the players) have any real knowledge about the 'Laws of the Game'?

As an ex referee I know which of those is true

I do not believe in good refs, because none are consistant enough, the only really good ref that I can remember is that bald one with big eyes from a few years back.

I don't think you will ever see a referee as good as Pierre Louigi Collina at Stonebridge Road.

She isn't very good but she is no worse than most of the other refs we get, or anyone else gets of course. There is no conspiracy against us the standard of refferees is just very poor.
To be honest the standard of football isn't very great either so we probably shouldn't expect too much.

I agree with Gaz that Jarnail Singh stood out so much above the usual dross that he was never going to stay with the Conference for long.

I concur with Gaz and Daves nan that Mr Singh was excellent. However, I thought that Amy did well at SbR this season. Tuesday's night's ref was poor.

The ref has to give it as he or she sees it.
They are literally never wrong, their position means that is impossible. Though do make mistakes of course but is a different matter.

I do not approve critcising referees

The referee we have on Saturday is one of the best I have seen this season, his name is Marvin Thompson, I can't remember which home game he did but he officiated on the Grays (away) game

    Mr Singh is very good.

Mrs Fearne was OK the other week. Her linesmen were rubbish.

Am surprised that Sir Trevor of Kettle has not been mentioned in this thread. How he is in the Championship I do not know.

Same for Atwell. Fast tracked rubbish.

Mr Kettle awarded a penalty to Notts Forest last weekend when to ball struck Wednesday captain Darren Purse on the back !!!

    Cheers,

Trev is consistently the worst ref I have ever seen.

    Hopkins runs him close.

Refs - mainly shocking, proven by how much even an "adequate" one stands out...

However, its not a job that I could, or even would want to do.

    Thankless task

We play in the fifth division, so we should expect fifth division referees. Given the stick that Prem refs are currently getting we should not be too surprised at getting some shockers at our games

To be honest, I don't think that they are too bad, we get some real dogs, but for the most part they are ok

He referreed the Tamworth game, in which Darius was dismissed for foul and abusive language - but yes, a pretty good display on both occasions.

    Spot-on comments from gaspode above.

I completely agree, many of the laws of the game are framed so that "if in the opinion of the referee" a handball (or a trip etc etc) occurred then a free kick must be given. This means that the referee is never wrong because it is his opinion.
This doesn't mean he will never make a mistake but can anybody tell me which player never makes a mistake during a game or which person never makes a mistake during their work, we are all human (including referees!!) and will make mistakes.
Criticising and abusing referees does mean that many will leave each year which in turn may mean that sometimes less experienced referees may have to be appointed to higher levels quicker than normal, so the criticisers and abusers can be causing the problem.
Don't forget - no referees - no game!!!

A lot of decisions we criticise referees for are because the lino(s) don't get a decision right or miss something altogether, At the end of the day as frustrating as it is at the time they are only human and we all make mistakes. some are costly, some are not, just as in football.

I think too many people take referees as biased or one sided however, if a decision isn't seen 100% like it ofen isn'y, the decision has got to go one way or another so no matter what side your backing your gonna end up with people slagin the ref off correct desion or not. Also consider they only see things once, they are human and do there best throughout the game. I think people need to understand that referees cannot always be correct and alot of the time, neither is the critic.
